Who is Gene Works?

Mission…

Our mission is to study, understand and take positive action to help support those with genetic inherited conditions, specialising in Intellectual Disabilities.

The Research Team are starting with Fragile X, where we will study the genetic makeup, cause and effect of genetic conditions, while striving to build cutting-edge therapies using technologies such are Crispr gene-editing. 

Our Community Team design, build and sharing FREE digital resources to help people and their families impacted by an intellectual disability. Education resources, communication aids, behavioural techniques, activity ideas and games to play! We are creating a library of tried and tested resources to help with a holistic care approach to support the growth and development of those we love. 

To do this we need finances which we will do using a crowdfunding style donation where 100% of your donation will be used for our research and community activities. But the way we see it is that without your help nothing will change and people with Intellectual Disabilities will continue to be underdiagnosed and disenfranchised from their community, void of the help and support they deserve wherever they live in the world. Therefore we have partnered with a company to bring our discoveries (when we have them) to the people that need them at a price that is accessible and not just for the rich or insured! We want to thank you for that support but UK charity rules stop us from doing that directly however our partner can and intends to, IF they can, while delivering to the patient and families first and foremost. Their intended mission continues with thanking you, our donors, with a financial reward of up to 3 times your donations. Not a loan, not a investment! you would be donating to a charity and maybe… maybe a private company will be in a position to thank you after the we have made a break through!

Put simply, we want to help people with Learning Disabilities and Intellectual Disabilities.  Our partner wants that too and also to financial thank you for backing us! But 100% of your donation comes to us and goes on our research and charitable activities.

Research

Using CRISPR and other similar techniques, the Genetic Research Team will investigate the possibility of simplifying the test for Fragile X to aid early diagnosis. They will explore the reactivating of silenced genes, produce, and deliver absent proteins and amino acids to lessen the symptoms, and strive to correct the mutation in the X chromosome responsible for Fragile X.

Community

In support of those affected by intellectual disabilities. The mission of the Community team is to support Parents, Careers, Guardians, Teachers, and other support and care provisions. The Community team will help to provide educational resources to anyone helping to care for individuals impacted by learning challenges. The team’s drive is to complement the resources already in place and to support the education setting by providing FREE online digital resources that can be enjoyed while learning and playing together.
