We are an innovative and exciting charity with a two-part mission. Our Research Team works at the cutting edge of medical discovery using revolutionary new techniques to understand the genetic makeup of inherited conditions so that we can better build treatments, therapies, and even cures. While our Community Team are designing, building, and sharing FREE digital resources to help people and their families impacted by an intellectual disability. Education resources, communication aids, behavioural techniques, activity ideas, and games to play! We are creating a library of tried and tested resources to help with a holistic care approach to support the growth and development of those we love.
Here’s the twist! Gene Works is a little different than other medical research companies! Your monthly donation helps to fund our medical research and support those affected by inherited intellectual disabilities, should we make a breakthrough or medical discovery then our partner organisation hopes to share our successes back with you through the Thank You Fund.
Who is Gene Works?
At Gene Works, we use genetic engineering techniques to research inherited medical conditions our first project focuses on Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). Fragile X is the most common cause of inherited intellectual disability, carried by 1-240 women and 1-600 men, it affects all nationalities and regions equally. Fragile X is an X chromosome-linked condition that reduces or stops the production of a key protein in the brain (FMRP), which is required for typical brain development. As Fragile X is both an inherited condition and intellectual learning disability it’s a natural choice for our research to start here!
The difference (twist) with Gene Works is that if and when we make a breakthrough with our research, our partner company will share that success back with you, our donors, with a financial thank you. Up to 3 times your donation! This is NOT a loan, it is certainly not an investment! Medical discovery is timely, costly, and very very difficult! Gene Works is a UK-registered charity and 100% of your donation will go towards the research and charitable activities of Gene Works. IF we crack something and make a breakthrough then we will use our intellectual property from the discovery to control the costs, so that it is accessible to EVERYBODY who needs it. However, our delivery partner will over time build a “thank you fund” from THEIR revenue (not from donations) and their intention is to thank you for funding our work via your monthly donation. There are some rules from the Tax Man, UK Companies House, and our partner so please keep reading. This is new and has never been done before, but so is the research you are funding.
Many people tell us that they don’t give to charity to receive back and so we have considered that as well. Should we make a breakthrough then you will have the option to donate any percentage of your “thank you” invite back to us and we will continue our work on the next research project, the next medical condition and we will continue our community support.
